Last night I shot a 389 Portsmouth Round (scored out of 600), which is quite probably the worst scoring round I have ever shot (my best begin 522). With a bit of research on the internet I think I have found the reason, as described by Imperial Archers:
Pantce (pah-ents) -
A small, short-lived poltergeist that is attracted to straw, particularly the kind of straw found in archery butts. A lost Pantce will often hitch a ride on a passing arrow; they take control of it and steer towards the visible straw on the butt (with the unfortunate side effect of veering a perfectly good arrow away from the gold). An experienced archer will see the poltergeist enter their arrow, and may be heard to mutter the small oath ‘Grrr, pantce!’
