At the moment I have four separate utilities moderating comments automatically – two blacklists, a link counter, keyword filter and a tarpit. All seemed to be fine but today a few got through. Their details have of course been harvested and added to the lists, but next time they will be different IPs, e-mail addresses etc…
Unfortunately, the people who devote time to making the anti spam plugins are always reacting to developments in the attacks. What is needed is a poacher-turned-gamekeeper – someone who knows how they work, what defeats them and is willing to change sides. It might take something to make the blog community not want to cut out their black heart with a rusty spoon, but I think they could prove useful.
Today I have found two more countermeasures to try, maybe six will be enough.

i’ve found the biggest deterent of all – is not to let Google index your site.
I stopped google when all the traffic i ever got from them was people looking for porn. But the side of that has been spammers not targetting my blog thinking it’ll add to their rakings.
That is always a possibilty, though I think the problem is bots picking up on pings to update services and then directly going for the post script. I have now added extra code to try and prevent it.
The next step is whitelisting, which I have so far avoided as I would prefer legitimate comments to appear automatically.
