Are tags beneficial? Browsing current options, there seems to be three options at the moment.
- WP categories.- A basic tag system (picked from a dozen or so). Broad scope, clicking will return all posts that in some way fit the description.
- Technorati tags.- Tag with anything you want, clicking will take you to the relevant Technorati page.
- WP tags.- Again, anything can be used as a tag, clicking returns similarly tagged posts.
Option 1 is currently in use and I am not going to drop them. If I happen upon a post that interests me, I am likely to click the category link to see if there is anything else interesting and broadly related.
Option 2 will be useless for finding other posts by me, but helpful for finding those written by others on similar topics. It should also increase readership a bit, though if search results are anything to by, the increase in constructive readership is unlikely to change.
Option 3 seems pretty useless to me. The chances of reusing tags in sufficient numbers to make them work is unlikely, and they won’t help me find other articles.
I’ll try 1 & 2 for a while, after all I can always can the tags if I don’t get on with them.
