This computer is 18 months old more or less, and I still have no backups of the data on it. Since the loss of my data would suck (and more than just a little), I think it is time I order a decent sized external drive for keeping things safe.
Since my iBook has 2 USB and 1 Firewire port, I was leaning towards a FW drive as there is nothing else I use there. However, FW never seems to have caught on, maybe beacause of USB2.0 or the fact that everything is USB compatible. My brothers PC has it, but my parents doesn’t – it appears to be included at the discretion of the manufacturers. I would hate to go with FW only to have legacy headaches should that sort of connection be discontinued (it also means I might not easily be able to shift files between computers).
There seems to be little difference in price between the two systems, and I can’t find any clear answers which are the best models and systems to choose.

I’ve got a usb 2 external – and you should get one too – so you can take it between other computers. shut up and buy it.
After payday
. The LaCie Porsche drives look like a reasonable deal. Or there are the USB/FW drives for about £30 extra.
I have two USB 2 drives and they are real good because I can take files between any computer (Mac or PC).
USB 2 is also faster than FireWire400, so even if you don’t use it to transport files, it will still be faster for you….
everyone likes faster!
I ordered 250GB (though I think ¼Tb sounds better!) USB LaCie today, should do the trick. The only downside is that OS X only supports booting over external Firewire drives, though that is not major thing for me.
For the record, it costs the same as I paid for a 4GB internal drive in ’97/98.
