This turned out to be not a lot more than the repair would have been. I really would have preferred to wait until ’07 with the new OS but when you need a computer you need a computer.
I managed to get the iBook running for enough minutes to scrag the contents of my home directory so things are pretty much up and running. Still to do is setting up to run WordPress locally, and, when my balance recovers in a few months, chucking in extra RAM and a bigger HD1.
[Edit: It appears to have a dislike to ejecting CDs - seems like there is a misalignment somewhere. Using a kitchen knife is about the only way to persaude a disc out, and Apple support is currently 'closed for training'.].
[Edit 2: Replaced in store with no questions/ testing. To the person who invented the Migration Assistant - I salute you (though five minutes to swap over the HDs would have been faster).]
- I debated putting Windows on, but for the 40 minute drive home I could come up with exactly zero reasons why. ↑
