The BBC cover a story on how much harder maths questions are for entry/ first year university level in other contries.
The UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry is offering a £500 prize to one lucky but bright person who answers the question below correctly.
Wow I thought, this must be something special. Maybe some Group Theory or Second Order Differential Equations. No, actually just some geometry (though the Chinese problem does get a few extra marks for needing some vector-maths).
Admittedly, the English question is embarassingly easy and takes about 10 seconds to come up with the answers 5,6 and (root 3)/3. I seem to remember covering this stuff before I did my GCSEs.
The solutions to the Chinese question are also straight forward, though the drawing and the framing of the questions are poor. With luck I might even win and be able to pay for my MOT.
[Updated: No paid off MOT, but I was at least I got the answers right. I'm still amazed that this is being spun as a difficult problem, and it would have been nice of the BBC to include a comment from the guy who won too.]
