Thor started the race with just two teammates so he was on the defensive when faced with large teams supporting the likes of Tyler Farrar. However, once the remnamts of pack turned onto the finishing ine, Hushovds’ Spring Classics tuned kick put him comfortable over the line to take the rainbow jersey.

As reigning Olympic and UCI time trial champion Fabian Cancellara was the prohibitive favourite for the win and to take his fourth title. On the first lap he looked slower than Millar, but he was just working less hard. On lap two he really put the hammer down – taking some risks across the Bailey bridge he pulled out an unbeatable time; enough to spare to hold up four fingers for the photographers as he rolled over the line. Job done.

“Attack the first lap and then hang on for grim death”.

 

David Millar had a simple plan for the Individual Time Trial and it almost worked; he was toe-to-toe with Cancellara for the first lap and some of the second. An extremely good 2nd place and at it set him up perfectly for wins at the Commonwealth Games and Chronos Des Nations in subsequent weeks. An excellent way to bookend his season.
